How many zone points is enough?

Not all minutes of exercise are created equal. ZonePoints uses a simple, science-based scoring system that rewards harder effort with a faster scoring rate, letting you track your training with one simple weekly number.

How points are earned

Instead of just counting the minutes you exercise, ZonePoints assigns a Zone Speed to your effort level. Warm-ups and light recovery stretches do not score at all, because they do not trigger the same physiological adaptations as harder training[1].

Once you reach the bottom of Zone 1 (which starts at 50% of your heart rate reserve by default), you start earning 1.0 point per minute. As your heart rate climbs, your scoring rate rises steadily with it. Because the point multiplier roughly matches the zone you are in, the math is easy to do in your head—if you need 15 points to hit your weekly target, just 5 more minutes in Zone 3 (Hard) will get you there without needing a scientific calculator. This means a punishing 20-minute interval session in a high zone can earn more points than a gentle 45-minute session in Zone 1.

Why higher intensity earns more points

The scoring system isn't arbitrary; it reflects biology. Research shows that hard cardiovascular training provides physical, metabolic, and mental adaptations that moderate exercise cannot match:

  • Cardiovascular and Calorie Benefits: Pushing into your higher zones triggers significantly greater heart health benefits, a higher rate of active calorie burn, and a stronger afterburn (EPOC) than moderate exercise, even when the total energy expenditure is similar[2]. High-intensity training also improves insulin sensitivity and your aerobic ceiling (VO2 max) far more efficiently than long, slow endurance sessions[3].
  • Anxiety and Stress Reduction: A landmark 2023 overview of systematic reviews in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that physical activity is 1.5 times more effective at reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression than leading medications or therapy—with high-intensity cardio associated with significantly greater improvements than moderate exercise[4].
  • Brain Chemistry and Desensitization: Pushing your heart rate into a high training zone desensitizes the brain's fear center (the amygdala) to physical symptoms like a racing heart[5]. It also triggers a large release of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) to repair stress damage to the hippocampus, and floods the brain with mood-lifting endocannabinoids, which are released in an intensity-dependent manner[6][7].

Because harder workouts demand much more from your body, they require more recovery time. The points system accounts for this: you reach your weekly goal faster by training harder, freeing up time for the rest and recovery your body needs to grow stronger.

Setting your weekly goal

The World Health Organization recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity per week[8]. In ZonePoints, a target of around 300 points per week matches that guideline.

ZonePoints starts you at 200 points and offers three presets you can select for your upcoming week:

  • 200 points: stay active and fit — an easy baseline to build the habit.
  • 300 points: boost your cardio — aligned with WHO guidelines for cardiovascular health.
  • 400 points: train for high performance — a challenging target for serious fitness gains.

Tracking your live performance

During a workout, the Zone Speed tile on your live dashboard shows your exact scoring rate at that very second. As you transition between zones, you will see this number rise and fall, giving you immediate feedback on the intensity of your current effort.
